The $37.5 million University Life Complex, located south of Center Street on 54 acres, calls for the construction of a competition baseball field, a competition softball field, a competition soccer field, a practice field for baseball and softball, two enclosed sheets of practice ice and a bike path connecting to the Keystone trail. Already completed are three multipurpose fields and a renovated dome for academic, athletic and community use.
Continuing the development of the site will enhance the spectator experience, providing seating, parking, rest rooms and concessions, and bolster UNO’s already-successful athletic programs for decades to come.
A facility on or near campus makes for an instant crowd. Otherwise, students and fans find out you played yesterday by reading the Omaha World-Herald. – Bob Herold, UNO Baseball Coach
The Promise of Engagement
By continuing to build upon its success, UNO athletics shows its commitment to an engagement with the UNO campus and the civic life of the greater Omaha community, with an eye to becoming a sustained component of those experiences. The UNO athletic and recreation complex will not only demonstrate the commitment of the university to enhancing the experiences and opportunities for students, student-athletes and the loyal fans who support them, but also will demonstrate the university’s commitment to the quality of life of Omaha.
A Place to Call Home
The development at 68th and Spring streets will give the baseball, softball and soccer teams some of the premier facilities in Division II athletics for both competition and practice, elevating the programs among the nation’s best.
The new facilities will cut travel time and streamline athletic competitions by placing them at a centralized location. Unlike players at other Division II programs, UNO athletes can’t walk from their dorm room to the field or rink. The University Life Complex will make it possible for students to spend more time studying, practicing and competing and less time commuting.
In athletics, as in life, we need a place to call home. It is our identity. It is where we find our strength. The University Life Complex project is focused on bringing the various Maverick athletic teams back to campus, giving UNO’s student athletes a place to call home.
